Several local folks, including Goncalo, one of the super hosts in the Intercontinental club lounge, suggested El Mercato as their favorite restaurant in Lisbon. We hesitated because, well, hello? We’re in Portugal and we are eating Italian? We read the rave reviews on social media, Timmy made a reservation online and off we went.
We were greeted warmly by Valentim and seated immediately. At 7:45 the room was 3/4 full with mostly local couples and families. By 8:30 the only available seats were at a communal high top that separates the market from the dining room.
Prakash brought us bruschetta and bread with olive oil. We consulted with Valentim and decided on a starter of Caprese salad with buffalo mozzarella and a lovely Albino Armani Pino Grigio from Grave.
After some deliberation Timmy choose the minced meat and Parma ham ravioli. I opted for ravioli as well, with pumpkin, rattlesnake cheese (not a typo), black truffle and parmigiano reggiano cheese.
Oh my goodness, such deliciousness. I wish I had the vocabulary to describe the wonderful melding of flavors… the truffle and pumpkin and both cheeses…heaven in Portugal. Timmy loved his ravioli too. The Pino Grigio paired nicely with both dishes.
We love dining in Europe for the simple fact that meals are leisurely. Professional servers are attentive (wine and water glasses refilled promptly) but unhurried, diners are given pause between courses.
We concluded this delightful evening with chocolate mousse and espresso for Timmy. I choose lemon gelato and Valentim suggested lemon tea. I’ve never had lemon tea before, it was perfect with the gelato.
Towards the end of dessert, Valentim brought us a complimentary taste of a very fine port, Croft Platinum reserve. It was super, I hope we can find it back in the states.
We are so fortunate to have this wonderful life. I’m grateful every day.
