Timmy found the Athens Gate restaurant after researching on Trip Advisor and Yelp. This wonderful gem is located on the rooftop of the Athens Gate Hotel.
We arrived at 6:30 hoping to enjoy the sunset. We were not disappointed. The bellman at the hotel showed us to the restaurant elevator. No one is playing elevator bingo in this one😊…it’s so tiny.
Our server, George suggested the traditional signature Athens Gate cocktail. When he said the main ingredient, Tsipouro, was similar to Grappa, I declined and went with the Mastic Spritz…lovely, with Masticha liqueur, sparkling wine, lime and fresh basil. Tim’s included the Tsipouro, ginger, lime, peppermint and Sprite. He loved it.
George patiently explained the menu and helped us choose two traditional Greek appetizers.
Traditional Cretan pie with yogurt dip flavored with ouzo.
Cheese saganaki with mandarin chutney from Chois.
Tim enjoyed the Greek traditional pasta with baby tomatoes and feta. (He really loves his pasta).
I loved the Grilled sea bass with string beans and saffron. This fish was beautifully prepared and the beans were a total surprise… served cold with olive oil and saffron…really yummy. Paired with a Greek rose’, I was in heaven.
If the main meal and starters were terrific, our desserts were superb.
Timmy went with a Chocolate sponge with mandarin sorbet and chocolate flakes.
George surprised me with Yogurt cream with lemon and meringue. I never would have chosen this dessert, as I’m not a meringue fan.
…and this is why I like to put my self in the hands of waitstaff… I’m usually rewarded with an amazing dessert like this.
Before we left the hotel for dinner, I asked Tim if I had bed head. His reply “Not at all dear, just a nice little rooster tail.”
Again, another memorable dining experience, wonderful food, served professionally at a leisurely pace, in a beautiful venue with a spectacular view.
