We awoke in another beautiful fjord. I took this photo from the balcony as we ate breakfast.
After breakfast I set out with a small group of shipmates on a tender for the village of Vopnafjorour. It’s a tiny fishing village with just 600 or so residents and no real visitors to speak of. Just a few hardy folks in camper vans. We spent about an hour walking through the town and up a small hill for some fantastic views of the harbor. Our local guide ended our tour with a visit to the community center where two very sweet women offered us smoked lamb and klein snacks.
We came upon these camper vans. Evidently these are very daring folks because the trip is arduous through the mountains and on unpaved roads. Oh to be young.
No one locks their doors and folks leave their keys in their cars. Can you spot the elves?
High school students spend the summer painting various buildings and other objects.
No matter the vantage point, Endeavor was in my lens. It is a very tiny village.
The women were very sweet and proud of their community. We followed the rainbow road back to our tender.
Lunch was fun but a bit rushed because Captain Scott Kelly was giving a talk in the Cove.
Late afternoon found us back on a Zodiac as we sped towards Hafnarholmi and Puffins.
This guy right here (and his kinfolk) were the subject matter of our visit. Puffins spend their winters on the open ocean. Their breeding season is from early April until early August. Puffins form long-term pair bonds. The female lays a single egg, and both parents incubate the egg and feed the chick. Iceland is home to about 10 million Puffins. I was so surprised at how tiny they are. I took close to a hundred photos and really regret not having a better camera than my phone.
I parked Timmy and climbed for better access and some spectacular views.
I think I mentioned that this was a full day. We barely had time to change out of our zodiac/expedition gear and head up to the Palm Court. Captain Larson said a few words and toasted to a successful inaugural voyage.
Every evening the expedition crew gives a recap of the day’s events and a preview of the next day.
The folks on the expedition crew are so knowledgeable and so generous with their time. We enjoyed every minute we spent with them.
Yes, another full day. We were really tired after dinner …so no evening entertainment for us.
